This past week has been a big one in the south of Italy. Yesterday was Ferragosto, a giant holiday throughout Italy. It's the equivalent of Labor Day in the U.S. in that it was created (in 18 BC, by the way!) as a way to give workers some well-deserved rest.
In other parts of Italy, I hear that cities are ghost towns this week. That's because they're all in Calabria!
In Soverato, things are hopping. While our neighborhood has been getting progressively busier and busier as families have arrived for several weeks of vacation, they are ALL officially here now.
The midway of rides and games on the lungomare is in full chaos mode, and parking is nearly nonexistent (not for me. Because I'm a kick-ass manifestor and I ALWAYS find parking.)
All week, we've had bonfires, drinks with friends, and family meals. I for one am ready for everyone to leave so I can have quiet Soverato to myself again!
I'm writing this before the holiday with the intention to take off a week from writing. So you'll hear from me next week.
Use the Italian Ferragosto as a reminder to slow down and savor life, wherever you live!
