Yes, it's still hot, and I'll be swimming in the Ionian Sea until November if I can, but the summer season is winding down here.
All of August, we saw an influx of visitors. Many are Italians, though there were a few Germans, English, Canadians, Americans, and Australians. Most rent the same apartment every year and spend every day at a lido enjoying the heat.
Here in Soverato, summer nights are hopping. The lungomare is filled with people doing their passeggiata (going for a stroll), families taking their kiddos to the giostre (amusement rides), and young folks hitting the discoteca.
Francesco had several friends and cousins come back to Davoli for several weeks, so we had some fun beach time and drinks with them.
Our First Summer in Soverato
I moved here to Soverato last September since it's hard to find a year-round rental. September is when all the apartments empty out. And it was after the chaos of the summer in Calabria. So this was our first summer living here. I was curious what it would be like.
For the most part, our apartment is in a quiet zone, so we weren't bothered by the thumping base of the clubs. Occasionally a rowdy group would sing drunkenly in the street below.
Parking was a bit of a challenge, though honestly, when we couldn't find parking on our street or nearby, we parked a whopping five minutes away. So, not terrible. Plus I always manifest good parking spaces, though Fra still doesn't believe me!
I liked being able to leave our quiet nest to take in the sights and sounds of the summer nights. Whenever there was a full moon, we headed to the beach to enjoy her glow on the sea.
We went dancing with my friend Dora once at a club that plays "our" music, and it was great to be able to walk home rather than drive.
The Calm After the Storm
Now that the visitors have left, things feel good. There's still energy in the city, though that will dwindle as it gets cold and the lidi close and restaurants reduce their hours.
The weather is a bit cooler, which makes it possible to go outside without melting. I look forward to getting back to walking every morning, something I haven't been able to do in months.
Soverato's got its own pace of life. Now that I've been here a full year, I can say that I like it. Yes, things get quieter in the winter, but that's the time to stay in and work on art projects or have dinner with friends. Summer is for being out with friends who only come once a year. And the in-between seasons of spring and fall are my favorite. I have the sea to myself!
