The Magic of the Presepe Vivente in Matera

I'm a sucker for all things Christmas, so when Fra told me we were invited to go on a tour of a few Southern Italian towns to see Christmassy things, I was all in.

The first stop on our tour was Matera. Once known as the shame of the south of Italy, because people lived in primitive conditions in the cave houses carved into the cliff until the mid-20th century, Matera is now a popular destination for visitors.

Unfortunately, we didn't have time to explore the town or the caves, but I'd love to return to learn more about this fascinating village. What we did see was an amazing live nativity!

Bethlehem Comes to Life

Our group was ushered through a gate guarded by a Roman soldier standing watch from above. As we wound through the narrow streets, we encountered vendors selling fish, sharpening stones, and carrying bread.

We were stopped by a seer, who pointed to a start in the distance that foretold of a special baby being born. Hmm...I wonder who that could be?

There were activities for kids, and plenty to keep us engaged.

The Story Isn't Over

At the end of the walk through the nativity, we saw Mary and Joseph gazing lovingly into a crib. I asked Fra why we hadn't seen the whole story, you know, "no room at the inn" and whatnot. He said because it wasn't Christmas yet, they weren't reenacting the entire story. So if you want the full show, I guess you've got to go for Christmas Eve!

The entire experience was delightful and well-organized. I'd highly recommend a visit to the presepe vivente in Matera!
